Why Walking in a Straight Line is Important

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of working at a school in Burlington, Ontario. The experience was none other, then unforgettable. I had the opportunity to build cherished moments with a bunch of kids that I thought I won't forget, and still I won't ever forget them, or that could be what I think at the moment. Regardless, why I'm writing this article or opinion piece, rather, is to contribute to the topic of why walking in a straight line, is, in fact, important, when it comes to school.

Here is 6 reasons why teaching kids and children to walk in a straight line, is important.

1. Discipline - Can you wake up to your alarm clock? If the answer is yes, you can probably, also partake in standing or being apart of a straight line.

2. Respect - keeps children attentive to their peers and teachers, and begins to instill respect in these relationships.

3. Creativity - Can teach a lesson such as alphabetic order, if having the students line up in this way.

4. Fun - although walking in a straight line sounds boring, when adding a song or theme to give lining up a purpose, this, in my opinion, should be thought of as fun, rather then free flow play to make a straight line.

5. Orderliness - if advising the students to line up in alphabetical order, for instance, can contribute to organization of the class and student development, such as, "Can we accomplish this faster next time?".

6. Exercise and Balance - although, not needed, for purposes of being tested, and yes, that can be argued as false, walking in a straight line takes focus, concentration and balance. Being able to accomplish a small task, such as this, can be a starting point to accomplishing a much bigger task or bigger goals later on.

Overall, I had a great experience working at this school, however, had a number of challenges with discipline and having students line up in a straight line. If you have a strategy, that you think I should try, please drop me a comment and thanks in advance.

These wands, are meant for teaching fine motor skills such as sprinkling, glueing, and sticking items together. The group, I was with were infants and could be a great craft to put together, as the wands can be made ahead of time, while supplies such as feathers and stickers can be provided to infants to try to attach to the star wands!
